Deepsouth - Documentary about American South

deepsouth is a documentary about the rural American South, and the people who inhabit its most quiet corners.
Beneath layers of history, poverty and now soaring HIV infections, four Americans redefine traditional Southern values to create their own solutions to survive.

Josh, a college student, seeks the support of an underground gay family miles away from his suffocating Mississippi Delta hometown.
With no funds and few resources, Monica and Tammy try to unite reluctant participants at their annual HIV retreat in rural Louisiana. Kathie, an Alabama activist, spends 120 days a year on the road fighting a bureaucracy that continues to ignore the South.

The film has been on a grassroots film tour since July 2012, screening 60 times - 40 of them in the rural South, at the invitation of communities.

Exclusive Interview with Buraka Som Sistema

I had the excellent opportunity of having an exclusive interview from Buraka Som Sistema, to talk a little about the new album Buraka which will be released the next 23rd of June of this year (2014).

Buraka the New Album

Unfortunately I couldn't be present but nothing that the Internet won't help and with the help of Universal Portugal (J.O).

Blaya

Art: Congratulations on your new album and the single Stoopid.
After i had posted some of your work online, I received some messages asking if your music had changed, if there were any news on your sound (because of the Zouk on the last album, and being a novelty for many people).
I would like to ask how did you selected or decided what kind of sound would be in this album?

Buraka Som Sistema: Everything is valid to be presented but nothing makes it more explosive to the eyes of the world than when is presented in the right time, till a certain moment with the explosion of the moombahton and the 3bal opened up a good road to explore new slow genres and with a more aggressive sonority on the mediums and lows. translating that to what we live, nothing made more sense than using zouk as one of our working tools (we already had used in the album Komba).

Branko

Art: With the video Stoopid, the explosion of colors, vivacity and joviality is clearly visible. what was the idea that you wanted to give in this video?

BSS: The idea continues to be based on the lyrics, that says that when the music is good, when it gives you good energy, when has that certain amount that you need in your life and you don't know where it came from, or who it made it, it doesn't matter who hears it...she's yours... So go with the flow... Get Stoopid, paint your black and white life with colors of all kind and shape.
Riot

Art: With so many albums, concerts and full diary, do you consider that your work is easier, more mature than the other past works, or you notice there is a more exigent of it from the pubic view that makes you rethink and try to reach more people or issues?

BSS: After all these years playing in so many stages, being in so many recording studios, with a lot of different artists, I think we reached the "pitch point", we've reached a certain maturity that is well reflected in our sounds and the way we think our music. nowadays the music from the world seems more global and more heterogeneous than ever, everything is part the parallel universe that we described in the "Off The Beaten Track" and that inspires us so much. The sound of our album is much more mature and concise and represents even more to something called Buraka and not any specific gender and on this world we don not feel that exists public to reach, there are stages to rock and super creative artists to work with, nothing more than that.

Andro

Art: Just to tell you a story that happened to me here in Birmingham, where there isn't many Portuguese, I was sitting with my earphones a listening to the song “Hangover”, when a guy goes past me and says in portuguese:  "nice sound!". Music have the power to unite people and lands, to kill a bit of the missing feeling. is there any story that you would like to share like this?

BSS: In middle of New Delhi, in India we crossed a young man that recognized us from a video and said he loved our song bababa-dududu-nhenhenhe-hey.... he said that he didn't have anything of portuguese, in his messed english, but said his portuguese colleagues from the Uni only listen to us.

Kalaf

Art: Checking your international concert diary, I noticed that you're not coming to England. When are you giving a concert here and why not Birmingham, that is one of the cities that all artists come over on stage (not only London, on the other way of it, this town is the concert town).

BSS: the places we play don't depend on our good will or us wanting to, we would love to come back to the UK, either London or Birmingham, there is nothing like rock in a good old british pub or make a tent in the middle of a country festival, sweat through the walls with the energy of our music. believe that as soon as possible for us we will go straight and visit our british friends.

I have to thank to the Buraka Som Sistema for the interview and all i can say is that I will wait for you with an Icy Pint when you get here and continue to revolutionize with your sounds, energy and good mood.

Hanns and Rudolf: The German Jew and the Hunt for the Kommandant of Auschwitz

I just received this wonderful book and I am already reading it.

Synopsis:

The untold story of the man who brought a mastermind of the final solution to justice.

May 1945. In the aftermath of the Second Word War, the first British War Crimes Investigation Team is assembled to hunt down the senior Nazi officials responsible for the greatest atrocities the world has ever seen. One of the lead investigators is Lieutenant Hanns Alexander, a German Jew who is now serving in the British Army. Rudolf Höss is his most elusive target.

Hanns and Rudolf reveals for the very first time the full, exhilarating account of Höss’s capture, an encounter with repercussions that echo to this day. Moving from the Middle Eastern campaigns of the First World War to bohemian Berlin in the 1920s to the horror of the concentration camps and the trials in Belsen and Nuremberg, it tells the story of two German men- one Jewish, one Catholic- whose lives diverged, and intersected, in an astonishing way.

About the Author:

Thomas Harding is a former documentary filmmaker and journalist who has written for the Financial Times and The Guardian, among other publications. He founded a television station in Oxford, England, and for many years was an award-winning publisher of a newspaper in West Virginia.

Life in a Jar: The Irena Sendler Project

I started researching for Irena's life... It's indeed inspiring and a true "shame" nobody gave her credit for her story.

Description:

During World War II, Irena Sendler, a Polish Catholic social worker, organized a rescue network of fellow social workers to save 2,500 Jewish children from certain death in the Warsaw ghetto. Incredibly, after the war her heroism, like that of many others, was suppressed by communist Poland and remained virtually unknown for 60 years.

Unknown, that is, until three high school girls from an economically depressed, rural school district in southeast Kansas stumbled upon a tantalizing reference to Sendler’s rescues, which they fashioned into a history project, a play they called Life in a Jar. Their innocent drama was first seen in Kansas, then the Midwest, then New York, Los Angeles, Montreal, and finally Poland, where they elevated Irena Sendler to a national hero, championing her legacy of tolerance and respect for all people.

Life in a Jar: The Irena Sendler Project is a Holocaust history and more. It is the inspirational story of Protestant students from Kansas, each carrying her own painful burden, each called in her own complex way to the history of a Catholic woman who knocked on Jewish doors in the Warsaw ghetto and, in Sendler’s own words, “tried to talk the mothers out of their children.” Inspired by Irena Sendler, they are living examples of the power of one person to change the world and models for young people everywhere.

Sixty percent (60%) of the royalties of Life in a Jar: The Irena Sendler Project are donated to the Irena Sendler/Life in a Jar Foundation. The foundation promotes Irena Sendler’s legacy and encourages educators and students to emulate the project by focusing on unsung heroes in history to teach respect and understanding among all people, regardless of race, religion, or creed.

Alex Clare - Too Close

You know I'm not one to break promises,
I don't want to hurt you but I need to breathe.
At the end of it all, you're still my best friend,
But there's something inside that I need to release.
Which way is right, which way is wrong,
How do I say that I need to move on?
You know we're heading separate ways.
And it feels like I am just too close to love you,
There's nothing I can really say.
I can lie no more, I can hide no more,
Got to be true to myself.
And it feels like I am just too close to love you,
So I'll be on my way.
You've given me more than I can return,
Yet there's also much that you deserve.
There's nothing to say, nothing to do.
I've nothing to give,
I must live without you.
You know we're heading separate ways.
And it feels like I am just too close to love you,
There's nothing I can really say.
I can lie no more, I can hide no more,
Got to be true to myself.
And it feels like I am just too close to love you,
So I'll be on my way.
So I'll be on my way.
And it feels like I am just too close to love you,
There's nothing that I can really say.
I can lie no more, I can hide no more,
Got to be true to myself.
And it feels like I am just too close to love you,
So I'll be on my way.
So I'll be on my way.
So I'll be on my way.
