The Bell Witch Legend

In the early 1800s, John Bell moved his family from North Carolina to the Red River bottomland in Robertson County, Tennessee, settling in a community, Red River, which became Adams, Tennessee many years later.  Bell purchased some land and a large house for his family.  Over the next several years, he acquired more land, increasing his holdings to 328 acres, and cleared a number of fields for planting.  He also was made an Elder of Red River Baptist Church.  The Bells also had three more children after moving to Tennessee.  Elizabeth (Betsy) was born in 1806, Richard  in 1811, Joel in 1813.

One day in 1817, John Bell was inspecting his corn field when he encountered a strange-looking animal sitting in the middle of a corn row. Shocked by the appearance of this animal, which had the body of a dog and the head of a rabbit, Bell shot several times. The animal vanished.  Bell thought nothing more about the incident, at least not until after dinner. That evening, the Bells began hearing "beating" sounds on the outside walls of their log house.

The mysterious sounds continued with increased frequency and force each night. Bell and his sons often hurried outside to catch the culprit but always returned empty-handed.  In the weeks that followed, the Bell children began waking up frightened, complaining that rats were gnawing at their bedposts. Not long after that, the children began complaining of having having their bed covers pulled from them and their pillows tossed onto the floor by a seemingly invisible entity.

As time went on, the Bells began hearing faint, whispering voices, which too weak to understand but sounded like a feeble old woman singing hymns. The encounters escalated, and the Bells’ youngest daughter, Betsy, began experiencing brutal encounters with the invisible entity. It would pull her hair and slap her relentlessly, often leaving welts and hand prints on her face and body.  The disturbances, which John Bell told his family to keep a secret, eventually escalated to such a point that he decided to share his "family trouble" with his closest friend and neighbor, James Johnston.

Johnston and his wife spent the night at the Bell home, where they were subjected to the same terrifying disturbances that the Bells had experienced.  After having his bedcovers removed and being slapped repeatedly, Johnston sprang out of bed, exclaiming, "In the name of the Lord, who are you and what do you want!" There was no response, but the remainder of the night was relatively peaceful.

The entity's voice strengthened over time to the point that it was loud and unmistakable. It sang hymns, quoted scripture, carried on intelligent conversation, and once even quoted, word-for-word, two sermons that were preached at the same time on the same day, thirteen miles apart.  Word of this supernatural phenomenon soon spread outside the settlement, even to Nashville, where then-Major General Andrew Jackson took a keen interest.

John Bell, Jr., Drewry Bell, and Jesse Bell, John Bell's eldest sons, had fought under General Jackson in the Battle of New Orleans.  In 1819, Jackson decided to visit the Bell farm and see what all the hoopla was about.  Jackson's entourage consisted of several men, some well-groomed horses, and a wagon.  As they approached the Bell property, the wagon stopped suddenly.  The horses couldn't pull it.

After several minutes of cursing and trying to coax the horses into pulling the wagon, Jackson proclaimed, "By the eternal, boys! That must be the Bell Witch!"  Then, a disembodied female voice told Jackson that they could proceed and that she would see them again later that evening. They were then able to proceed across the property, up the lane, and to the Bell home where Jackson and John Bell had a long discussion about the Indians and other topics while Jackson’s entourage waited to see if the entity was going to manifest.

One of the men claimed to be a "witch tamer."  After several uneventful hours, he pulled out a shiny pistol and proclaimed that its silver bullet would kill any evil spirit that it came into contact with.  He went on to say that the reason nothing had happened to them was because whatever had been disturbing the Bells was "scared" of his silver bullet.

Immediately, the man screamed and began jerking his body in different directions, complaining that he was being stuck with pins and beaten severely.  A strong, swift kick to the man's posterior region, from an invisible foot, sent him out the front door.  Angry, the entity them spoke up and announced that there was yet another "fraud" in Jackson’s party, and that he would be identified and tormented the following evening.

Now terrified, Jackson’s men begged to leave the Bell farm.  But Jackson, on the other hand, insisted on staying so that he could ascertain who the other "fraud" was.  The men eventually went outside to sleep in their tents, but continued begging Jackson to leave.  What happened next is not clear, but Jackson and his entourage were spotted in nearby Springfield early the next morning, presumably enroute to Nashville.

Over time, Betsy Bell became interested in Joshua Gardner, a young man who lived not far from her. With the blessing of their parents, they decided to marry.  Everyone was happy about their engagement.  Well, almost everyone.  The entity, for reasons unknown to this day, repeatedly told Betsy not to marry Joshua Gardner.

Betsy and Joshua's former schoolteacher, Richard Powell, had been noticeably interested in Betsy for some time and had expressed interest in marrying her when she became older. By some accounts, Powell, who was eleven years Betsy's senior, was a student of the occult, although it has not been proved.  He was secretly married to a woman in nearby Nashville, Esther Scott, during the time he spent at Red River expressing his fondness for Betsy.  According to old accounts, Powell politely expressed his disappointment with Betsy's engagement and wished her a long and prosperous marriage with Joshua Gardner.

Betsy and Joshua could not go to the river, the field, or the cave to play without the entity taunting them persistently.  Their patience finally reached critical mass, and on Easter Monday of 1821, Betsy met Joshua at the river and broke off their engagement.  The disturbances decreased after Betsy ended the engagement, but the entity continued to express its dislike for John Bell and vowed relentlessly to kill him.

Bell had been experiencing episodes of twitching in his face and difficulty swallowing for almost a year, and the malady seemed to grow worse with time.  By the fall of 1820, his declining health had confined him to the house, where the entity commenced removing his shoes when he tried to walk and slapping his face when he experienced seizures.  Her loud, shrill voice could be heard all over the farm, cursing and chastising "Old Jack Bell," as she often referred to him.

John Bell breathed his last breath on  the morning of December 20, 1820, after slipping into a coma the day before.  Immediately after his death, the family found a small vial of unidentified liquid in the cupboard.  John Bell, Jr. gave some of it to the cat, which died instantly. The entity then spoke up, exclaiming joyfully, "I gave Ol' Jack a big dose of that last night, which fixed him!"   John, Jr. quickly threw the vial into the fireplace, where it burst into a bright, bluish flame and shot up the chimney.

John Bell's funeral was one of the largest ever held in Robertson County, Tennessee.  As family and friends began leaving the graveyard, the entity laughed loudly and began singing a song about a bottle of brandy.  It is said that her singing didn't stop until the very last person left the graveyard.  The entity's presence was almost nonexistent after John Bell's demise, as if its purpose had been fulfilled.

In April of 1821, the entity visited John Bell's widow, Lucy, and told her that it would return for a visit in seven years.  The entity returned in 1828, as promised.  Most of its visit centered around John Bell, Jr., with whom the entity discussed such things as the origin of life, civilizations, Christianity, and the need for a mass spiritual reawakening.  Of particular significance were its nearly accurate predictions of the Civil War and other events.

The entity said farewell after three weeks, promising to visit John Bell’s most direct descendant in 107 years.  The year would have been 1935, and the closest living direct descendant of John Bell at that time was Nashville physician, Dr. Charles Bailey Bell.  Dr. Bell himself wrote a book about the "Bell Witch," published in 1934.  No follow-up was published, and Dr. Bell died  in 1945.

The entity that tormented the Bell family and the Red River Settlement almost 200 years ago is often blamed for unexplainable manifestations that occur near the old Bell farm today.  The faint sounds of people talking and children playing can sometimes be heard in the area, and it's not uncommon to see "candle lights" dance through the dark fields late at night.  Photography is especially difficult; some pictures taken in the area show mist, orbs of light, and other phenomena, including human-like figures who were not present when the pictures were taken.

The cause of the Bells’ torment almost 200 years ago, as well as today's horrid, unexplainable manifestations, remains a mystery.  Numerous theories abound, but there is no one theory that is universally agreed upon by Bell Witch enthusiasts and researchers -- and there probably never will be.  Different people have different standards of proof.  Most do agree that there was "something" very wrong at the Red River Settlement in the early 1800s, and that there may very well be "something" wrong there today.

Just as a curious note, the Death of John Bell was investigated by the US Government and since they (or as they say) didn't found anything still they declared that this Murder was of supernatural causes.
i wonder what those files say...

Ed and Lorraine Warren - The True Story

For those who saw the movie last year (2013) The Conjuring or Amityville Horror , will remember these couple.

Ed and Lorraine Warren are real as well as their Occult Museum is true.

For over fifty years now, Ed and Lorraine Warren have been considered America's preeminent experts on the subject of spirits and demonology. Even more important perhaps, is the fact that they have also been the very same people for the past fifty years whom religious authorities have repeatedly called in to control some of the most profane outbreaks of diabolical phenomena in the country.

Ed and Lorraine Warren have dedicated their lives to this work, and  they share the wisdom they have gained during their extraordinary career in this field. The work they perform is remarkable. And you can be certain, after all this time, they know things that are completely astounding.

Ed Warren is a demonologist. Lorraine Warren is a trance medium. But you'd never know it if you met them on the street. They are not occultists. They are not strange. They are essentially ordinary people who happen to do highly extraordinary work.

The Warrens - The Early Years

Ed Warren grew up in a Haunted House in Connecticut  from the young age of five until he was twelve he reflects. “My father, who was a police officer at the time would often say, “Ed, there's a logical reason for everything that happens in this house." but he never came up with that logical reason."

“My family would all go to bed and just around two to three o'clock in the morning, many times I would hear the closet door  beginning to open up. At first I'd look into that closet and see only shapeless darkness, then slowly  I'd start to see a light beginning to form and it would morph into like a ball shape, sort of like a basketball and then I'd begin to see a face in that ball,"
" That is called a Ghost Globule. "

"In that Globule was a face.  face of an old woman, and she was not looking at all pleasant. The globule  would then come out into my bedroom and then accompinied by audible footsteps and heavy breathing. The room would then became icy cold, an unnatural cold, a Psychic Cold, and I'm saying to myself, “Ed There's a logical reason for  everything,” But by that time I was out of the bed and right between my mother and father in their bed.”

When Ed Warren was 16 years-old he worked as an usher at "The Colonial Theatre" in Bridegport Connecticut, and it was there that he met Lorraine Rita Moran. "Lorraine and her mother used to come every Wednesday night," Ed remembered.
“ I'd see Lorraine coming in and we started talking, and we became friends. I was 16 at the time and she was 16,
one night I walked her home and asked her for a date"
" And that's how it all got started.”

Art & Ambition

Ed Warren went into the Navy on his seventeenth birthday and four months later, after his ship sank in the North Atlantic he was home for 30-day survivor's leave. It was during that leave that the two were married. When Ed returned after World War II he and Lorraine had a daughter, and Ed went to Perry Art school which is a Subsidiary of Yale for about two years.

“I got fed up with that,” Ed said. “I told Lorraine one day, “You know, I can paint better than these instructors. What they're teaching me is a lot of Geometry and a lot of nonsense that I don't need for painting.”  I said, "We'll have some fun."

It was through painting that The Warrens began their Ghost Investigations. If Ed heard of any place that claimed to be haunted, whether a haunted house, or a haunted location he would drag Lorraine to check it out.
“Oh Ed, there are no such things as ghosts,” Lorraine would say, Ed would then remind  her of his days  at his haunted home in Bridgeport & Lorraine would go.

I'd go out in the middle of the road where they could all see me and I'd start to sketch the house and you'd see the curtains going back and forth “What's this kid doing?” they would be thinking. “I would do a really nice sketch of the house with ghosts coming out of it, and I'd give it to Lorraine, she'd go knock on the door and with her Irish personality she'd say, “Oh, my husband loves to sketch and paint haunted houses ,and he made this for you.” I made it special for them.”

The New England Society For Psychic Research

The New England Society for Psychic Research was founded in 1952 and the goal at first was to simply investigate hauntings. Then, around 1965 the Warrens went into a home where the spirit of a little girl named Cynthia and they listened to the little child coming through a deep-trance medium and she was looking for her mother.

Ed thought to himself, “This is horrible, this little child is earth-bound. She's looking for her mother constantly day in and day out. How do I help this child?”

Ed & Lorraine Warren Public Figures

Public Figures

Edward "Ed" Warren Miney (September 7, 1926 – August 23, 2006) & Lorraine Rita Warren, née Moran, (born January 31, 1927) were Artists, American paranormal investigators and authors associated with prominent cases of haunting. Edward was a World War II US Navy veteran  who became a noted demonologist, author, and lecturer. His wife Lorraine was a professed clairvoyant and a light trance medium who worked closely with her husband.

Career

In 1952, the Warrens founded the New England Society for Psychic Research, the oldest ghost hunting group in New England, and opened the The Warren's Occult Museum. They are the authors of numerous books about the paranormal and about their private investigations into various reports of paranormal activity. They claimed to have investigated over 10,000 during their career. The Warrens were among the very first investigators in the controversial Amityville haunting.

Main Article: Notable Investigations

Amityville:

The Warrens are best known for their involvement in the Amityville Horror case in which New York couple George and Kathy Lutz claimed that their house was haunted by a violent, demonic presence so intense that it eventually drove them out of their home.
The Amityville Horror Conspiracy authors Stephen and Roxanne Kaplan characterized the case as a "hoax".
Lorraine Warren told a reporter for The Express-Times newspaper that the Amityville Horror was not a hoax.
The reported haunting was the basis for the 1977 book The Amityville Horror and 1979  and 2005 movies of the same name.

Demon Murder Trial :

In 1981, Arne Johnson was accused of killing his landlord, Alan Bono.
Ed and Lorraine Warren had been called prior to the killing to deal with the alleged demonic possession of the younger brother of Mr. Johnson's fiancee. The Warrens subsequently claimed that Mr. Johnson was also possessed.
At trial, Mr. Johnson attempted to plead Not Guilty by Reason of Demonic Possession, but was unsuccessful with his plea.
The case was described in the 1983 book The Devil in Connecticut by Gerald Brittle.

Werewolf:

The Warrens claim to have exorcised a "werewolf demon" in 1983.
The subject of the case, Bill Ramsey, had bitten several people, believing himself to be a wolf.
The events surrounding this case were later described in a 1991 book written by the Warrens, Werewolf: A True Story of Demonic Possession.
No photos or video evidence was available to confirm the possibility and reasoning that Bill Ramsey was, indeed, possessed by a werewolf-type demon or evil spirit. The case remains filled with questions and skepticisms.

Smurl Family Haunting:

Pennsylvania residents Jack and Janet Smurl reported their home was disturbed by various supernatural phenomena, including sounds, smells and apparitions.
The Warrens became involved and claimed that the Smurl home was occupied by three spirits and also a demon that allegedly sexually assaulted Jack and Janet Smurl.

The Perron Family Haunting:

In the 1970s, the Warrens claimed the Perron's Rhode Island home was haunted by demons because of a woman, presumed witch, who lived there in the early 19th century named Bathsheba Sherman, cursed the house.
It is the subject of a 2013 film The Conjuring.

The Warren's Occult Museum

The Warrens Occult Museum is the oldest and only museum of its kind.

This world-renowned museum has attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors from across the world.
Inch for Inch Their Museum houses the largest array of obscure and Haunted artifacts.
Items used in extremely dangerous occult activities and diabolical practices around the world.
To touch one of these items would be the opposite of touching something holy, something blessed.

See the Shadow doll that can come to you in your dreams, and stop your heart! See the Satanic Idol found in the deep woods of Connecticut, the Conjuring mirror used for summoning spirit, the Vampire’s coffin used by a modern day vampire, Bare witness to a Ragedy-Ann doll which is responsible for a death of a young man, and multiple attacks on those who once mockingly came in contact, See Masks used as a Topa for Diabolical projection,  Child Tomb stones that were used as Satanic Alters, a Famous Organ that plays by itself.

You will also see Psychic Photography, Pictures that would combust, and Crucifixes that were malevolently thrown from walls and desecrated, Egyptian, and African cursed items, Death curses, a Shrunken head, Possessed toys and animals, Voodoo, Fertility and other Killer dolls!

One of their most famous artifacts – The Annabelle Doll will be on exhibit. Annabelle is believed to be responsible for the death of an individual who came in to contact with it...  This doll also reportedly slashed a grown man several times across the chest.
She terrorized a family for months until the Warrens and a an Episcopal priest were called in and an exorcism was performed.
Although Annabelle has been exorcised several times it is believed that some energy is still attached to this doll.

PRS Director Ryan Buell co-hosted visited the Occult museum while hosting a tour with Lorraine Warren.
It is there when Ryan Buell first claims he saw Annabelle’s head move up and down startling him, as if Annabelle was nodding at him, as if to acknowledge his presence.

The Warrens Occult Museum is a place that any seasoned paranormal investigator or enthusiast in the world would agree, is a Must see.

Exclusive Interview with Buraka Som Sistema

I had the excellent opportunity of having an exclusive interview from Buraka Som Sistema, to talk a little about the new album Buraka which will be released the next 23rd of June of this year (2014).

Buraka the New Album

Unfortunately I couldn't be present but nothing that the Internet won't help and with the help of Universal Portugal (J.O).

Blaya

Art: Congratulations on your new album and the single Stoopid.
After i had posted some of your work online, I received some messages asking if your music had changed, if there were any news on your sound (because of the Zouk on the last album, and being a novelty for many people).
I would like to ask how did you selected or decided what kind of sound would be in this album?

Buraka Som Sistema: Everything is valid to be presented but nothing makes it more explosive to the eyes of the world than when is presented in the right time, till a certain moment with the explosion of the moombahton and the 3bal opened up a good road to explore new slow genres and with a more aggressive sonority on the mediums and lows. translating that to what we live, nothing made more sense than using zouk as one of our working tools (we already had used in the album Komba).

Branko

Art: With the video Stoopid, the explosion of colors, vivacity and joviality is clearly visible. what was the idea that you wanted to give in this video?

BSS: The idea continues to be based on the lyrics, that says that when the music is good, when it gives you good energy, when has that certain amount that you need in your life and you don't know where it came from, or who it made it, it doesn't matter who hears it...she's yours... So go with the flow... Get Stoopid, paint your black and white life with colors of all kind and shape.
Riot

Art: With so many albums, concerts and full diary, do you consider that your work is easier, more mature than the other past works, or you notice there is a more exigent of it from the pubic view that makes you rethink and try to reach more people or issues?

BSS: After all these years playing in so many stages, being in so many recording studios, with a lot of different artists, I think we reached the "pitch point", we've reached a certain maturity that is well reflected in our sounds and the way we think our music. nowadays the music from the world seems more global and more heterogeneous than ever, everything is part the parallel universe that we described in the "Off The Beaten Track" and that inspires us so much. The sound of our album is much more mature and concise and represents even more to something called Buraka and not any specific gender and on this world we don not feel that exists public to reach, there are stages to rock and super creative artists to work with, nothing more than that.

Andro

Art: Just to tell you a story that happened to me here in Birmingham, where there isn't many Portuguese, I was sitting with my earphones a listening to the song “Hangover”, when a guy goes past me and says in portuguese:  "nice sound!". Music have the power to unite people and lands, to kill a bit of the missing feeling. is there any story that you would like to share like this?

BSS: In middle of New Delhi, in India we crossed a young man that recognized us from a video and said he loved our song bababa-dududu-nhenhenhe-hey.... he said that he didn't have anything of portuguese, in his messed english, but said his portuguese colleagues from the Uni only listen to us.

Kalaf

Art: Checking your international concert diary, I noticed that you're not coming to England. When are you giving a concert here and why not Birmingham, that is one of the cities that all artists come over on stage (not only London, on the other way of it, this town is the concert town).

BSS: the places we play don't depend on our good will or us wanting to, we would love to come back to the UK, either London or Birmingham, there is nothing like rock in a good old british pub or make a tent in the middle of a country festival, sweat through the walls with the energy of our music. believe that as soon as possible for us we will go straight and visit our british friends.

I have to thank to the Buraka Som Sistema for the interview and all i can say is that I will wait for you with an Icy Pint when you get here and continue to revolutionize with your sounds, energy and good mood.

Anne Rice, the Interview

Interview

Anne Rice

I received an invitation through GoodReads to have a video interview with the Great Writer Anne Rice.

You may know her only as the writer of Interview with the Vampire (the 90's movie with Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt) about vampires and vampire life; but the fact is that Anne has several books written not only about vampires but also about witches and now Werewolves, with her new book:

Wolf Gifts Chronicles

And because of this book, it was created a good opportunity to talk to Anne via GoodReads.

The Interview through video call in which several of the "GoodReaders" were invited to make their questions to Anne Rice and see her in real time (I was one of the lucky ones in several aspects, since 3 of my questions were answered).

Some facts about Anne Rice

During the interview

Question:
In your books, you have supernatural creatures, such as vampires, ghosts, angels, witches and now werewolves; but you always represent them as in humanized instead of the "monster" version.
Why do you humanize them?

Anne:
(smiles) That is a good question! I think maybe I consider myself as a monster. Inside each of us there is an animal or monster. The vampire are seductive and can literally "suck" the blood or energy of others; the witch exists inside each women and can be from the light or the dark, just like your mood; the werewolves are a new thing for me to write, but I think the monster, the transformation can be our aggressive side that we only discover when we are "trapped" like an animal in situations during life.
That's why I think I humanize these "creatures", because in fact, who tells us that who is who, or aren't we all animals? And because i have to enter in the character, sometimes I have to think I am a monster... and I am one.

Question:
If you could have diner tonight in New Orleans, where would it be and with which fictional character would it be?

Anne:
Fictional characters of mine or somebody else's?

Editor:
Either one, pick whatever you like.

Anne:
Well I would have diner at Mr B's on Royal Street, right opposite of the Hotel Monteleone, and I would have a Chicken Gumbo, by the way, with rice and their delicious bread and butter; and I think I would have Lestat with me, Louis, mighty vampires, and maybe Armand.

(Click on the pictures to go there)

Question:
Do you think that Lestat become like an Alter Ego of yours? Since you wrote so much about his story, dug so much about his persona?

Anne:
Yes. Lestat is a male Alter Ego of mine. There is no question about it. And he obsesses me like no other character. I always know where he is in the world. In any minute. If someone comes in the Facebook page and says: "Where is Lestat tonight?", I can tell them... He's in New York or he is Rio de Janeiro or he's in France. I have a relationship with that character that's absolutely unique...
And I would like to add that, when he chooses to speak, he speaks; and when he doesn't chooses to speak to me... he does not speak.

I must say that I really love this opportunity, as a reader, as a writer as a lover of books.
Anne Rice has her own world and when she speaks, you can almost imagine here with one foot in each of the worlds and you can see her passion when she talks about writing or her characters.
It was a good lesson.

Here is the Video interview (the first of my questions was not filmed because I had a problem with the camera):

Thank you to GoodReads!
